Tuatara Brass Monkey Race News

Updated at 06:02

As at 05:00 today Arthurs pass had only 41.5 mm of rain for the last 24hrs so the race for is looking good to go:

Current flow is around 64 cumecs, this will hold and rise slightly during the day

Currently we have wind in Ohoka at 11 kph. But there is still a strong wind warning in place but our/my expectation, based on forecasts, is around 5-15 knots for the morning, rising in the afternoon.

The little fresh we had has moved things and there is a strong likely hood that the start will be shifted upstream, as there is a good pond near the next set of pylons and a well formed road. This may not suit those wanting to break the magic 40 minutes, but puts competitors straight into the main flow   , look out for the caravan when you enter the river bed.

Ecan have also completed work on a new groin near our red cross station, this has created an interesting rapid, and while it will not be closed requires some good skills. At least one more experienced paddler has already found out just how good you need to be and got a little wet . There is a good line out to the left and the arrows will be out, for those who wish to take a cleaner line.

The 2010 WWCC Beginners courses: Applications open 2nd of August!

The 2010 WWCC Beginners Courses are coming: Applications open 2nd of August! Get your applications prepared to be sent in for this date. (Application forms on this website)

The 2010 courses will be starting in October. These courses are designed as an introduction to the fun of white water kayaking and to pass on the skills needed to join in on future club trips. Don't expect to learn everything in two weeks; kayaking can take years to master, that's one of the reasons we enjoy it!

The Dates

Course 1: 4th to 17th October
Course 2: 26th October to 7th November.

Central Plains Water decison - May 2010
The independent commissioners have recently released their report. The biggest issues for kayakers are the impacts on flows and the presence of intake structures in the Rakaia and Waimakariri (just above the gorge bridge).

The original proposal provided for a massive storage dam, and a year-round take of up to a maximum of 40 cumecs. It was proposed that CPW take all Waimakariri water once levels once the flow above their intake exceeded 63 cumecs.

There have been huge numbers of submitters against CPW, kayakers and otherwise, and the Court appeal process is only just beginning. In short the kayaking outcome is much improved as the Commissioners propose a maximum 24 cumec take, and CPW will only be able to take half of whatever water is available above an unmodified flow of 66 cumecs. The intake structures pose less of a hazard than originally proposed.

The key points are:

  • there will be very little take outside the irrigation season as CPW can only take to top-up on farm storage - and no large dam
  • the take is subject to one-for-one flow sharing from commencement of take at an unmodified flow of 66.1 cumecs as measured at the old highway bridge – that is, CPW can only take one of each additional two cumecs above that flow
  • a holiday rule to reduce the impact on kayakers during the summer season
  • NO take during the coast to coast
  • restrictions to ensure the first fresh after a period of low flows stays in the river
  • Rakaia water is to be taken in preference to Waimakariri water – when sufficient water is available from the Rakaia no water will be taken from the Waimakariri
  • There is a series of conditions around the intake structures, including escape paths, and both kayaker and independent expert involvement in design, testing and commissioning.
There is more information on the Whitewater NZ website, including an assessment of the number of days of kayaking affected - refer to

Thanks hugely to all those who contributed to the CPW process - particularly Ian Huntsman, Ian Fox, Ken Livingston, Hugh Canard, Tony Ward-Holmes and Maree Baker.

Tuatara Tours Brass Monkey - UPDATE

Tuatara Tours Brass Monkey - Race 1 Cancelled BUT RACE 2 IS ON!!!

The Whitewater Canoe Club (WWCC) regrets to to inform you that we have had to cancel race 1 of the Tuatara Tours Brass Monkey Kayak Race Series 2010. This race was to be held on Sunday 20 June 2010. The series will now start on 4 July 2010 (how fitting that this is independence day).

The need to cancel arose because this week Environment Canterbury (Ecan) advised us that in order to be granted a licence to run the event in the Waimakariri River Regional Park we must meet a far higher compliance standard than ever before and to indemnify Ecan against any liability arising from the race.

WWCC and  Ecan have had discussions today the result of which is we agree that the race can be run safely with the policy and management procedures WWCC have developed over the 20 or so years we have been running the race. The issue of indemnity has also be clarified and now poses no barrier.

The Tuatara Tours Brass Monkey Kayak Race Series 2010 can now resume in time for race 2 and organisers are looking at the possibility or a make up race at the end of the series.

regards

Robin Rutter-Baumann

Hire a club racing kayak for the Brass Monkey

The Brass Monkey is coming up, and we have three downriver race boats in the shed just waiting for eager club members.

You can borrow:
A Wavehopper
A very flash (Vision?) fibreglass DRR boat.
or, if you are feeling REALLY tough:
A Cobra Eliminator sit-on top.

Standard weekly hire rates apply, though we might cut a deal if you book for all the races.  It would be great to see these boats get out and get used.

We have a couple of race paddles as well.
